When asked what time it is, we could be less precise with our answer.

There are two times of day in winter; light and dark.

What time is it?

It’s dark.

What time is it?

It’s light.

Dark and light, consistent daily companions — sleep when it’s dark, work when it is light — no need for a clock.

Welcome to winter; this unavoidable can’t get away from the reality of life in this same-old cold northern habitat. Better said, welcome back to winter — our national pastime of outdoor fun and stubborn pride as a northern nation, and welcome back to the joy of staying inside, avoiding the cold and appreciating fireplaces.

Each year has four seasons, perhaps as life does too, an indistinguishable shift in the night, from one season to the next. Welcome back, winter solstice!
